How my witchcraft practice looked like in the beginning & what has changed after 6 years
Disclaimer: I’m sharing my own experiences here. What has felt true for me over the past years. There is no right or wrong way to walk your witchcraft path, and no single ‘correct’ way to experience it. If something I share resonates with you, feel free to take it with you and integrate it. If it doesn’t, simply leave it behind. You don’t have to take anything I say as the one truth. :) Always listen to your own intuition.
From Divination Magick to Trusting My Intuition
When I first stepped onto my witchcraft path, I started with divination magick. Tarot felt like the most natural beginning. My mother owned a deck, so I’d grown up around the cards. I studied Tarot every single day, memorizing meanings, pulling spreads, and doing readings for even daily decisions and after a while, I realized it became an unhealthy part of my practice. And if I’m being completely honest, I started relying on Tarot so much because I didn’t trust myself or my intuition. I felt insecure and needed an “external voice” to tell me what was right or wrong.
And yet, I’m still grateful for Tarot. It was my gateway into a more authentic practice, the doorway that helped me discover who I really am as a witch. After Tarot came astrology, pendulum work, and other forms of divination. Some of them resonated a little, some didn’t at all. I went through a long phase of trial and error. It was expensive lol, but absolutely necessary.
Even though I no longer practice divination-based magick, it taught me one of the biggest lessons of my life: Always focus on cultivating your own intuition and stop relying on external means or opinions.
And that lesson changed everything.
From Self-Empowerment to Empowering Others
When I first started studying seriously, I felt this huge wave of empowerment. A feeling of finally taking my power back. And I think many witches begin this way. We’re tired of feeling powerless in systems that don’t reflect who we are. We want to consciously create a life we love and for me, witchcraft brought magick into manifestation in a way that felt aligned with my most authentic self.
But over the years, though, my “why” shifted. I moved from: How can witchcraft help me? to How can I serve through my witchcraft?
These days, my practice reflects helping others remember their own magick, reconnect with nature, and live in alignment with the natural world.
If you’ve seen my recent video, you know this moment: standing in Hansel & Gretel’s hideaway on a blanket of moss, asking permission to enter, and promising the trees that I’d help people remember that we need nature. That’s when I realized my path had become something bigger. Less about me, more about collective healing, remembering. Maybe that’s the Virgo rising in me, who knows. But empowerment is still the root, it just grew into something deeper.
From Confusion to Curiosity and Finally Loving the Research
When I started out, I felt completely lost. Witchcraft, paganism, the occult. It was like opening Pandora’s box. Every topic connected to a bunch more, and I kept falling down endless rabbit holes. Paganism vs. Wicca confused me for ages. Herbs, folklore, deities, astrology … every new discovery led to more questions. But with time, confusion turned into curiosity. Curiosity turned into passion. And passion turned into my current practice. Today, research is one of my favorite parts of my practice! Especially in autumn and winter, I find myself at my desk for hours with tea, reading, learning, taking notes, and piecing together old wisdom. Yes, it’s overwhelming at first, but eventually, everything starts to click and you’ll start to see the bigger picture.
From Labels to Embracing My Own Unique Path
At the beginning, I thought I needed a witch label - like Green Witch, Kitchen Witch, or Divination Witch. Everyone (online) seemed to have their category figured out. Meanwhile, I was in a huge “Who am I?” phase, both spiritually and personally. Eventually, I realized: I don’t need to put myself in a box and restrict myself by that. Being a witch to me already is enough. And I started to understand that I’m a mix of many paths: folk magick, herbalism, seasonal living, folklore, and more. And my interests evolve over time, just like I do. I no longer worry whether someone expects me to still do Tarot or follow certain trends. I simply follow what my inner witch is curious about next.
Labels can help us feel like we belong, but they shouldn’t restrict us. So now, I embrace my own unique blend of interests and I love it!
From Following Spell Books to Creating My Own Practice
In the beginning, I thought every spell had to be elaborate and dramatic collecting soil at midnight on a specific moon phase, preparing rituals days in advance. But honestly… that’s just not me. I love simple, daily magick. Small rituals. Small moments of intention. Spellwork that feels light, joyful, and intuitive. And it’s completely okay to do no magick at all sometimes. Forcing myself to do elaborate rituals when I wasn’t in the right mindset did more harm than good. So I learned to create spells my way - meaningful, intuitive, and low-pressure.
Your practice is yours.
If something simple works, embrace it.
If something doesn’t resonate, let it go.
No witch has to do everything another witch does!
And the following is one of my biggest lessons: Spells don’t work just because you follow instructions.
In the beginning, I bought every book, followed every spell, lit every candle… and nothing happened. Because I didn’t understand energy. Spell ingredients are like ingredients in a pot, but if you never turn on the heat, nothing cooks. Energy is the heat. Learning to manipulate, direct, and raise energy changed everything. Books can guide you, but you are the source of power. If your magick isn’t working, ask yourself: Do I understand how energy works? It’s the foundation of everything.
From Needing Fancy Tools to Making My Own
Here’s a confession: I bought a LOT of tools at the beginning of my path. Perfectionism took over, and I thought I needed “the right” objects to be a real witch. But with time, I realized: You can start with nothing and still do powerful magick! Now I love thrifting tools with stories, making my own items, or receiving things as gifts. Handmade tools carry so much more energy and meaning. And I’d bet that over time you (just like me) will find out that you’ll only need a small fraction of what you think you need. Your craft comes from you, not the tools. They are just supporting you in directing your energy.
From Feeling Unready to Working with the Good People & Elementals
This shift came later in my journey. At first, the idea of working with the Good Folk or elementals honestly scared me. I felt completely unready. And tI’m here to tell you this: That’s okay.
We all move at our own pace. The same goes for deities, ancestry work, or spirit communication. You don’t need to work with any of them unless something truly calls to you. One day, you might feel drawn to a specific deity or nature spirit. And when the time is right, you’ll know.
Your intuition will guide you.
Never force anything.
Magick unfolds in its own timing, just like we do.
